Tallgrass Express String Band

Arts & Entertainment

Formed in 2004, Tallgrass Express is a truly regional band, staying close to its roots and
performing mainly at community events in the Flint Hills region.

Description

With authentic storytelling and high caliber musicianship, Annie Wilson and her Tallgrass Express String Band’s “Songs of the Flint Hills” celebrate local landscape and culture. Rancher-songwriter Wilson shares her work in the band’s over 100 recordings and in her weekly newspaper column.
Wilson says, “We feel incredibly lucky to live amidst the splendor and
wide open spaces of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie. Through our music, we celebrate this land
and its people.”
Known for their “Songs of the Flint Hills,” Tallgrass Express specializes in celebrating the land and people of the Kansas tallgrass prairie and Flint Hills.
On guitar and vocals is songwriter Annie Wilson, named “Flint Hills Balladeer” by the Kansas Governor for her songs about prairie plants and animals, history, and ranching culture. Annie and her husband operate the Five Oaks Ranch near Elmdale, west of Cottonwood Falls.
On bass, harmonica and vocals is Carl Reed from Manhattan, who has also written several of their songs.
On fiddle and mandolin is Derrick Doty also from Manhattan. Derrick is also Kansas music historian, giving talks across the state for the Kansas Humanities Council.
Now in their 21st year, the band recently completed their fourth all-original album - “Out on the Tallgrass Prairie”.
You can find ALL their music, including lyrics and related photos, on their website - tallgrassexpress.com, on Spotify and other streaming services.
